bullet Helen BUNYON was born on 19 Jan 1903 in New York City (Manhattan). (1658)(1659) (1660)(1661) (1662)(1663) (1664) According to daughter Peg Davis Smith, Helen was born in New York City as stated in Helen's bible in Peg's possession. This has been collaborated by Helen's death certificate.

The following are recollections from daughter Lillian Davis Lauver (Lillian was five when her mother died and her father spoke little of Helen's story. Peg's attribution to the Bible entry should be taken very seriously.):

Born 1902 in New York City. Mother died early and father believed to have left prior to her death. Raised by aunt and uncle, possibly on Long Island or Staten Island and possibly of wealth or upper middle income. Met Fred J. Davis during WWI when Fred was recovering from war wounds suffered in France and transferred to an infantry hospital in New York. She was a nurse there. They married, but aunt and uncle disapproved of marriage, probably because Helen was an Irish Catholic and Fred was not. Her maternal grandfather McQUADE, first name unknown, lived with Helen and Fred in Altoona until he died. McQuade is probably buried in Altoona.
Aunt was probably the sister of Helen's mother, so last name would be different and unknown as of 3/18/96. It is believed that aunt and uncle owned one or more jewelry stores in NYC. She resided 2105 7th Ave. in 1921 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa..(1665) She resided 501 Third Ave. in 1925 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa..(1666) She resided 322 East Harrison Ave. on 24 Apr 1926 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa..(1667) (1668)(1669) She resided 318 East Bell Ave. in 1930 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa.. She died on 27 Jun 1933 in Logan Township, Altoona, Blair Co., Pa..(1670) (1671) (1672)(1673) (1674) Buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Section N, Lot 194 (same as Fred Davis).
Arrangements by S.P. Hickey & Son.
Cause of death listed as goiter operation. She was Calvary Baptist Church on 27 Jun 1933 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa..(1675) (1676) Helen was said to have been raised from birth as a Catholic and left the church by age 12, which became a point of contention in her family. She resided 2105 Third Ave. - Altoona on 27 Jun 1933 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa..(1677) (1678) She was buried on 30 Jun 1933 in Rose Hill Cemetery, Altoona (Blair Co.), PA. (1679)(1680) (1681)(1682) (1683) see source # 25
Section N , Lot 194 Rose Hill Cemetery (Same as Fred J. Davis)

The name on Helen's tombstone is Helen M. Davis. Her daughter Lillian's birth certificate shows Helen Louise Bunyon. Helen's own birth record shows just Helen Bunyon. As was the case with many Catholics, no middle name is selected at birth. A name is sometimes added at confirmation. She was a Housewife 11 Nov 1918 to 27 Jun 1933 in Logan Township, Altoona, Blair Co., Pa.. (1684)(1685) (1686) She was Catholic in New York City. Family was Irish Catholic. It is said that she was disinherited by her foster Aunt when she married Fred J. Davis, a non-Catholic.
At the end of her life she was attending the Calvary Baptist Church, Altoona. She was also known as Helen Margaret Bunyon or Helen Louise Bunyon. Her birth certificate shows no middle name ( she was born into an Irish Catholic family).
Her daughter Lillian's birth certificate states a middle name of LOUISE. Her tombstone reads Helen M. Bunyon. The author's best guess is an adopted middle name of Margaret, after her mother's first name. Birth certificate states no middle name. This is common among Catholics when by confirmation a name of a saint is added as a middle name. Helen possibly adopted her mother's first name, MARGARET, by the time her mother died, or her adoptive aunt gave her the middle name so she would never forget her mother.
However, her daughter Lillian's birth certificate states LOUISE as being the middle name. Further discovery of documents will be necessary to determine the preferred middle name.

Veterans Administration report of 10 Nov 1932 described Helen:
"Impressed worker as being a healthy, normal individual, fairly intelligent, who copes with her problems with surprising ease."

first child of Helen and Fred was a miscarriage; a seventh child died two weeks after being born; an eighth child was a miscarriage. Parents: Joseph A. BUNYON and Margaret A. MCQUADE.

She was married to Fred John DAVIS on 11 Nov 1919 in New York City.(1687) (1688)(1689) (1690)(1691) (1692)(1693) (1694)(1695) The first child, Dorothy, was born Dec. 21, 1920.
The marriage took place five days after Fred Davis was released from the hospital in New York where he had been recovering from wounds suffered on a WWI battlefield in France. Her foster aunt supposedly opposed the marriage. Helen was only 16 at the time and she was marrying a non-Catholic. Children were: Dorothy "Dot" Eleanor DAVIS, Russell Albert DAVIS, Margaret "Peg" Louise DAVIS, Melvin John DAVIS, Lillian May DAVIS, Beverly Jean DAVIS.

bullet Joseph A. BUNYON was born about 1878 in U.S.A..(1696) (1697) According to LDS IGI source, Joseph was born in New York City. While this may be possible, no previous evidence suggested this specific place of birth. More primary records are needed before conclusion. He resided 2308 8th Ave. Manhattan on 19 Jan 1903 in New York City. (1698) He was a Clerk on 19 Jan 1903 in New York City.(1699) It was initially thought that his first name was Frank, but daughter Helen's birth certificate states that his name was Joseph. There is a possibility that this confusion originates with another ancestor named Joseph Frank Brawn, who sometimes used the name Frank. Parents: Morris BUNYON and Mary QUILL.

He was married to Margaret A. MCQUADE on 16 Apr 1902 in New York, NY.(1700) (1701) Children were: Helen BUNYON.

bullet Morris BUNYON(1702) Evidence to support conclusion is weak. More documentation is needed.
