When PA Railroad went bankrupt, some records were taken to the State Archives in Harrisburg. However, according to the curator of the PA Railroad Museum in Altoona, some records were destroyed. In 1996 there were plans to complete a database of former rail employees at the Rail Museum by 1998.
Fred Davis took out a death benefit (see source #18) on June 11, 1919. He probably began work that year or shortly after leaving the Army
Obituary states that he worked 34 1/2 years for PRR, retiring in 1953. Fred was an infantry veteran and received the Purple Heart for wounds received on a battlefield in France. He was hit by machine gun fire and lay in a fox hole for two or three days before being rescued and transferred to a hospital in New York where he met a nurse by the name of Helen Bunyon, his first wife. He was Pleasant Valley Assembly of God in Logan Township, Altoona, Blair Co., Pa.. Could be the former Full Gospel Church that his parents Russel and AraBella attended. He was also known as John Frederick Davis. (2177) This is the second instance of coming across this data. Solution is to obtain copy of birth certificate, which should be available from Allegheny Co., Pa., for 1897. The claim is very possible, but there is no question that the grandfather of the compiler of this data, through his own eye witness accounts, preferred Fred John Davis throughout his life. This fact may not have been known even to his children. Died of pneumonia.

The marriage took place five days after Fred Davis was released from the hospital in New York where he had been recovering from wounds suffered on a WWI battlefield in France. Her foster aunt supposedly opposed the marriage. Helen was only 16 at the time and she was marrying a non-Catholic. bullet Llewellyn DAVIS was born between 1780 and 1784 in Wales. (2261)(2262) (2263) Previous secondary information estimated Llewellyn was born between 1780 and 1790. The census of 1810 showed him to be in the 26-45 age category which would calculate the latest year of birth as 1784. He resided Lower Antietam Hundred in 1810 in Antietam, Washington Co., MD. (2264)(2265) The 1810 U.S. Census (Washington Co.) shows a "Lewellin" Davis living in Lower Antietam Hundred. The 1800 Census does not show the same person. The speculation then is he arrived in Washington Co. (and possibly America) between 1800 and 1810. He was a Millwright in Antietam, Washington Co., MD. (2266) He was buried in Antietam, Washington Co., MD. (2267) He died in Antietam, Washington Co., MD. (2268) This link is based purely on the secondary information in a letter from Mrs. Shirley Ermine of Long Beach, MS, dated 10 April 1997. More research is needed as of 1 Aug. 1997 to confirm the claim.

September 1997: The text reference in "History of Indiana County, Pennsylvania" seems to confirm that Llewellyn Davis was born in Wales and was the founder of this compiler's Davis family in America.

He was married to Margaret JONES.(2269) Children were: Thomas DAVIS, John DAVIS, Llewellyn DAVIS, Hanson DAVIS, Jane DAVIS, Benjamin C. DAVIS.

bullet Llewellyn DAVIS was a contractor and builder in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa.. (2270) He resided in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa.. (2271) Parents: Llewellyn DAVIS and Margaret JONES.

(2288) Time of death was 5:00 a.m. Cause of death is believed to have been respiratory failure. Had she survived this physical crisis, it is possible she would have faced another battle with cancer. Parents: Fred John DAVIS and Helen BUNYON.

She was married to James Wilson SMITH Jr. on 5 Dec 1942. Children were: Nancy Eleanor SMITH , Beverly Ann SMITH, Rev. James Wilson SMITH III, Rev. John Francis SMITH, Rev. James Wilson SMITH III, Dennis Keith SMITH .

She was married to James R. TERRY.(2290) Possibly married in Roanoke, VA, during her parents' residence there.

bullet Mary Elizabeth DAVIS was born about 1843 in Indiana Co., Pa.. (2291) This name does not appear in the book "History of Indiana County, Pennsylvania," but does appear in the census. It is possible that it was missed in the text or Mary was the same woman as one of the other Davis daughters named differently in the text. She resided Armaugh post office, E. Wheatfield Twp. on 18 Jul 1860 in E. Wheatfield Twp., Indiana Co., Pa.. If this woman is Mrs. William Schum, then the records should be merged. There is no record as of the 1850 census of an additional female in the family other than the mother, Rebecca and Mary.

Mary is not included as a known child in the records of Brenda Davis Joseph as indicated in her e-mail of 14 Jan 1999.

9 Mar. 1999 - Questions have arisen that speculate that Mary and Elizabeth may have been one and the same person. Brenda Davis Joseph has no record of Mary's existence and her research shows that Elizabeth was born between Amos and William. If there were too separate women, then both should have been recorded in the Census of 1850. Was she "Mary Elizabeth DAVIS" ? Parents: Benjamin C. DAVIS and Eleanor CHANEY.

bullet May "Daisy" DAVIS was born about 1875 in Pennsylvania. (2292) The facts regarding May's birth only support a range between 1875 and 1876, however, there is a Fairview Cemetery record of the birth of son William in 1876 which, most likely, would rule out May being born in 1876, She resided 1814 Sixth Ave. on 9 Jun 1880 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa.. (2293) She died before Jun 1922.(2294) Parents: Thomas R. DAVIS and Rachel Cecilia RORABAUGH.

When told that no one was there, Melvin insisted that his Grandpa was there. He then said, "Wait up for me, Grandpa, I'm coming!" At that moment Melvin died. (2319)(2320) (2321) She died before 1913.(2322) Estimate of year of death being before 1913 is based on the "History of Indiana County, Pennsylvania," p.1349, where is mentioned that the wife of William H. Davis (brother of Rebecca) was appointed a postmistress in 1903 and "...has filled that position for the last ten years." The biography also states that Rebecca had died. If this woman is Mrs. William Schum, then the records should be merged. There is no record as of the 1850 census of an additional female in the family other than the mother, Rebecca and Mary. Parents: Benjamin C. DAVIS and Eleanor CHANEY.

She was married to John MCELHANEY. (2323)

Russ played a key role in the legislature early in his career. He served as legal council on one committee of the Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention of 1968. His exact role in the convention is documented in the record of the convention. Also, some state legislation was drafted by Russ Davis and became law after being introduced into the House of Representatives. The Legislative Record / Journal of the House may also be a source of the mention of his name.

bullet Thomas R. DAVIS(2417) was born on 29 Oct 1849 in Indiana Co., Pa..(2418) (2419)(2420) (2421) (2422)(2423) The Fairview Cemetery records, copied by the Blair County Genealogical Society, shows a birth date of 27 December 1849 and a date of death as June 28, 1922. The date of death, as recorded by the death certificate as June 27 is probably correct. However, additional sources may be needed to finally confirm the correct date.
The date of birth is not yet settled, but for now, it is assumed that the death certificate record is correct. According to this record, Thomas's son R. A. Davis (Russell) was the informant and presumably provided the date of birth information. He resided 1814 Sixth Ave. in 1878 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa.. (2424)(2425) He was an Engineer, Pennsylvania Railroad on 9 Jun 1880 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa.. (2426) He was a Collier after 9 Jun 1880 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa.. (2427) The obituary of Thomas Davis is not clear as to, when he "embarked in the coal business," whether he started a coal business or worked for an existing coal company.
The collier occupation occurred between jobs as a railroad engineer. Noting after 1880 as the time period is because he was still listed as a railroad engineer in the federal census on 9 June of that year. He resided between 1881 and 1905 in Roanoke, VA.(2428) One daughter, Mrs. James R. Terry (given name unknown), remained in Roanoke after her father Thomas's death. He resided about 1904/5 in Baltimore, Md.. (2429) Source was published in 1913, so he moved to Altoona sometime after 1912. He died on 27 Jun 1922 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa.. (2430)(2431) (2432) He resided 423 Crawford Ave. on 27 Jun 1922 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa..(2433) He was buried on 30 Jun 1922 in Fairview Cemetery, Blair Co., Altoona, PA. (2434)(2435) (2436) Buried in Section K, Plot 3 According to Renners Directory (a city directory for the City of Altoona), there was
a Thomas R. Davis, an engineer by profession, residing at 1814 Sixth Ave., Altoona, listed in the 1878-79 edition.
The Census of 1880 confirms this finding. The census also indicates a Jenny ? (illegible and appears to he either Herrtory or Kerrtory), age 23, born NY, also resided in the house. Her occupation was listed as "servant."

The obituary of Thomas Davis states that there were eight children. However, there is a "baby Davis" (no first name recorded) listed as being interred in the same family plot in June 1876. Because son William was born in September 1876, it is possible that the infant was the child of another member of the family. Parents: Benjamin C. DAVIS and Eleanor CHANEY.

bullet William H. DAVIS was born on 12 Aug 1847 in East Wheatfiled Township, Indiana Co., PA.(2442) (2443)(2444) (2445) He owned Blacksmith Shop (formerly owned by Daniel Grumbling) in 1877 in Mechanicsburg, Brushvalley Twp., Indiana Co., PA. (2446) William Davis purchased the blacksmith shop of Daniel Grumbling about 1877, "being one of the best iron workers in this section." When the "History of Indiana Co." was published in 1913, William was still operating his blacksmith business. He was a blacksmith in 1880 in Mechanicsburg, Brushvalley Twp., Indiana Co., PA.(2447) (2448) Apprenticed at the age of 13 to Abraham Wilson of Dilltown. He was elected as Justice of the Peace in 1894 in Mechanicsburg, Brushvalley Twp., Indiana Co., PA. (2449) "In 1894 Mr. Davis was elected justice of the peace, and he has filled that office ever since, administering the affairs of that office with an even, efficient hand, and his judgment has always been sustained in every case which has been appealed from his office. He has proved himself invaluable in this position, and he holds the confidence of all who have had dealings with him, and of all who know him. He has always been a stanch [sic] Republican in politics, and has served as school director, as burgess of Mechanicsburg, and also as member of the council of the borough." He died after 1912 in Mechanicsburg, Brushvalley Twp., Indiana Co., PA.(2450) He resided 1877 to aft. 1912 in Mechanicsburg, Brushvalley Twp., Indiana Co., PA.(2451) He was elected as School Director in Mechanicsburg, Brushvalley Twp., Indiana Co., PA. (2452) He was elected as Borough Councilman in Mechanicsburg, Brushvalley Twp., Indiana Co., PA.(2453) He was elected as Burgess in Mechanicsburg, Brushvalley Twp., Indiana Co., PA. (2454) Burgess was a term carried over from the pre-Revolutionary days and meant that he was a delegate, or legislator. He was a Machinist in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa.. (2455) He was a Journeyman in PA.(2456) The source stated that he worked around the county for about 22 years - it is assumed that the author meant Indiana County, but because he was a machinist in Altoona for three years, Blair County could also be. We do know that he purchased a Blacksmith Shop in Indiana County in 1877. He was M. E. Church in Mechanicsburg, Brushvalley Twp., Indiana Co., PA.(2457) Active in church work as a class leader and Sunday school teacher.

M.E. probably stands for Methodist Evangelical. Parents: Benjamin C. DAVIS and Eleanor CHANEY.
