her birthplace as being Poland and stated this on his 1951 personal history form.
Insufficient documentation as of March 2003 to determine the correct country
of origin. One possible resolution might be, knowing that Sam was born in Lithuania,
determine his native language. If Sam spoke Russian, it would point to a Russian
origin. If he spoke Polish, than the Polish origin would be more likely. She
immigrated about 1911 to Kiev, Ukraine, Russia.
(1857) Came over with sister and took sister's married name, probably
to avoid Jewish persecution. Death certificate states that she had been in New
York 60 years.
Assuming she lived nowhere else prior to living in the Bronx, that would have made her 15 when she immigrated, or about 1911. She died on 8 Apr 1971 in Bronx, NY.(1858) died at a nursing home in Riverdale, Bronx, NY. Buried at New Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Cypress Hills on April 12, 1971. See source #8, Certificate of Death.
Date calculator states age at death as 86, but certificate states 85. Certificate does not state actual birth date except the year, so date conflict could simply be a matter of narrowing the possible month of birth. She was buried on 12 Apr 1971 in New Mt. In Brooklyn area of NYC She was naturalized none in died a non-citizen. (1860) (1861) Social Security Number on death certificate is same as husband Sam's. Possibly she did not have number since she was not a US citizen. Records show surname as being Cohen, but may have used Witkoff (sp?) at some point. Witkoff not believed to be birth name, but name of sister's husband. Most likely reason for name change was to avoid Jewish persecution. Did not seek naturalization.
According to her daughter-in-law Lenore Glaser Welkes and granddaughter Carol Welkes Lauver, she never learned to speak English. Parents: COHEN?.
She was married to Shleima or Schmul (Sam) WELKES abt 1912 or 1913 in Brooklyn, NY. Died prior to Mollie. His death certificate states that he had been in the Bronx for 45 years which would have meant about 1924. Mollie's death certificate states that she had been in the Bronx 60 years. The oldest son, Jacob, was 9 years old in May 1923 when Sam was naturalized (abt 1914). Assuming they were married when the children were born, marriage record search should start with 1912, then 1913, then earlier. Children were: Jacob "Jack" WELKES, Louis (Abraham) WELKES.
