He is a son of Christian and Mary (Hawk) Lauver. His grandfather, Michael Lauver, of German descent, was born in Dauphin County, Pa., and came to Fayette Township, Juniata County, in the early part of the present century, where he took up land, on which he erected buildings and which he greatly improved in other ways, converting a wilderness into a fertile farm. An active and industrious man, he was largely instrumental in making Fayette Township what it is to-day. He was married in Dauphin County, and was the father of nine children: Susan (or Catherine), Mrs. Isaac Landis); Annie, who married Henry Auker, the first man murdered in Juniata County, he having been killed by a man named John Lovering, who was executed for it in 1861; John; Henry, Michael; Christian; Jacob; Frederick; and Balzer. Michael Lauver, it is thought, died at the home of his son, Michael, Jr. He was a Whig. He was a consistent member of the Mennonite church, and a man highly respected by all who knew him. His wife died on the homestead farm. Christian Lauver, son of Michael, and father of Jacob Lauver, was born in Fayette Township, and received there a fair German and English education. He spent his early life on the homestead farm, after which he purchased a large tract of forest land, the home of wild animals, and by hard work, made of it a dwelling place for himself and his family. Building a log house and barn, with the assistance of his sons, he cleared the land. A fine stone mansion soon replaced the log house; he planted extensive apple and peach orchards, and in a few years had made the recent wilderness one of the finest and most productive farms in the Township. He subsequently sold the homestead farm, and purchased a property near Browns Mills, where he died in 1881. Christian Lauver married, in Fayette Township, Mary (Polly) Hawk, a native of Berks County, who died in 1839. They had eight children: John, deceased; Michael, of Beale Township, Juniata County; Jacob, of Milford Township; Samuel of Nebraska; Elizabeth (Mrs. Hilary Ehinziller): Annie, who died at the age of twenty-one; Lucinda (Mrs. Jacob Moyer), deceased, of Fayette Township, Juniata County; and Mary (Mrs. George Leister), of the same Township. After the death of his wife, Christian Lauver married Miss Catharine Guyer, a native of Fayette Township. Their children were: Rebecca; Hattie E. (Mrs. John Liester), of Fayette Township; and Angeline (Mrs. Jacob Basom), of Greenwood Township. Christian Lauver was a Whig, and subsequently a Republican. He held various Township offices, including those of supervisor and school director. He was a prominent and consistent member of the United Brethren church, and was highly respected. Jacob Lauver received his education at a public school of Fayette Township, conducted in a rude log school house, by a lady named Sarah Sellers. He continued on the homestead farm with his father until he had attained the age of eighteen, when going to Mifflin County, he spent one year working with his uncle, who resided in Oliver Township. He then spent a year on a farm in the State of Illinois. After his return, he bought, in conjunction with Solomon Kauffman, the homestead farm of his father. After cultivating this farm for one year, Mr. Lauver sold out his interest to Kauffman, working for some time after this at farm labor with his brother, his uncle and others. In 1861, he rented the Shietz farm, which he continued to cultivate for seven years. This was followed by eight years on the Jenkins farm, after which he lived on a rented farm in Mifflin County for seven years. In 1883, Mr. Lauver returned to Milford Township, Juniata County, and purchased for $8,000 a farm of 110 acres adjoining the one on which he now resides. In 1892, he added to his possessions the farm of 122 acres owned by Richard Cunningham, which he purchased for $6,000. On the latter farm he erected in 1893, at an expense of $2,500, a fine brick dwelling. Mr. Lauver has a high reputation in Juniata County as a live-stock dealer, being the owner of some of the finest horses to be found in the State. He is a Democrat, and has held the offices of assessor and school director, and other in his Township; he was for three years president of the school board. Jacob Lauver was married in Fayette Township,. Her father, now deceased, was a blacksmith and farmer of Fayette Township, Juniata County. They have ten children: Hannah (Mrs. Edward Smith), of Colorado; Henry, a farmer, of Milford Township; John E., of Illinois; Charles S., residing on the homestead farm; Katie (Mrs. Joseph Earnest), her husband cultivating the first farm purchased by Mr. Lauver; William A., of Milford Township; James; David B.; Silas, still attending school; Nettie B., who died young. Mr. Lauver's religious views are liberal. Both he and his wife are members of the Grange, in which he has held the position of treasurer. This was typed by me, Patti George, as written in the "Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of The Juniata Valley, comprising the Counties of Huntingdon, Mifflin, Juniata, and Perry, Pennsylvania." Jason Paul LAUVER (Private). Parents: Paul LAUVER and Darla HALASOWSKI. Jay Andrew LAUVER was born on 10 Jul 1911 in Van Wert, Juniata County, Pa.. (6292)(6293) (6294) He died on 28 Mar 1988 in Juniata Co., Pa..(6295) (6296) From the Patriot-News (Harrisburg, Pa.), 11 March 1982 Jay took up carpenters' tools for the first time at about age 10, when he built a Yankee hay ladder for an express wagon. Lauver was 19 when he quit the farm to pursue a carpentry career. He left not because of any dissatisfaction with farming, he said, but because "it seemed like time to get off the farm." Besides, carpenters made more money than farmers in those days. He served a brief apprenticeship with master carpenter Charles Gingrich, who had a big reputation as a barn builder in Juniata County, before striking out on his own. But the Depression followed close on the heels of his departure from the farm and soon forced Lauver back to the farm. "I started at 30 cents an hour, and, one year later, I was earning $1.50 for a 10-hour day," he said. "Still, I was lucky in that respect." "Some boys didn't have anything to do. I had plenty to do; I just didn't make much money doing it." But Lauver and others who lived on farms were not hit as hard by the Depression as city dwellers. "We had everything we needed," he said. Lauver divided his attention between farming and carpentry until about 1938, when he again struck out on his own. Carpenters, in those days, did far more than frame out houses and put in prefabricated cabinets. He and his crew constructed only about 10 houses from bottom to top. But Lauver's skills also extended to wiring and plumbing. "I tried masonry work for a while, but decided I had no talent for it," he said. Most of Lauver's efforts, with at most five men working for him, were directed toward remodeling and subcontracting work. But he is a carpenter in the old sense of the word. Kitchen cabinets were handmade, not prefabricated. And Lauver could turn his hand to just about any aspect of the business. In retirement, Lauver enjoys refinishing furniture. "I've only worked a couple hours for pay in the last year and a half,"he said. He builds furniture but will not lay claim to the title of cabinetmaker. "A lot of hobbyists are much better at cabinetmaking than I am," he said But it is evident that Lauver respects the handmade. He cherishes a pie cupboard and flour cabinet crafted by his father in 1888, shortly after he and Phoebe Shirk were married, and a corner cupboard built by a Junitata County cabinetmaker named Graybill from Bunkertown in the 1880s. Despite such respect for the old-fashioned, Lauver has no desire to see time stand still. And he can mark the passing of old-time carpenters like himself with but a twinge of regret. "I did things the best way I could. It's a whole new ball game today," he said. "You only serve your own generation, then you're done." Still Lauver enjoyed his days in the sun as a master carpenter in Juniata County. Parents: Solomon M. LAUVER and Phebe C. SHIRK. He was married to Viola M.
