Butler County was named for Irish born General Richard Butler (1743-1791), a Revolutionary War soldier. Butler County, Kentucky, was also named after him. The county was created from part of Allegheny County on March 12, 1800. It was still attached to Allegheny County until 1803. Butler, the county seat, was created in 1803, incorporated on February 26, 1817, and chartered as a city on January 7, 1918.
