bullet Fred Lewellyn BRAWN(1551) resided on 8 Jul 1927 in Farmington, Strafford Co., NH.(1552) Obituary of mother states his first name as Frank. He died on 19 May 1930 in Portsmouth, Strafford Co., NH.(1553) He was born 25 Dec bet 1864 & 1868 in Farmington, Strafford Co., NH.(1554) (1555)(1556) (1557) It is believed that Fred's sister Minnie was also born in 1867. This could mean that Fred and Minnie were twins, or that the year of his birth, reported in an Altoona, Pa., death notice was incorrect. Fred's parents were married in 1865, which would allow a birth year of 1866 or even 1868 since the next child, Mary, was not born until 1872.

In April 1882, the Altoona "Tribune" provides an account of the accident that killed Fred's father Joseph. In the article, it notes the oldest child being a boy of 14. This would point to a probably birth year of 1868. An obituary of Fred L. Brawn states that his year of birth was 1867. For now, 1867 is regarded as most accurate.

According to Fred's great-grandson, Brian Brawn, Fred was born 25 Dec. 1864. This needs to be verified because Fred's father Joseph married Saran Empfield in Oct. 1865. Obituary of mother 8 July 1927 states his first name was Frank.

There is a strong suggestion that Fred may be Joseph's son, but not the son of Sarah. Fred did not live with his father and his family with Sarah Empfield Brawn in Altoona. Fred stayed behind in Maine. In the 1880 Census for Gardiner, Kennebec, Maine, there is a family listed as such:

Martha Philbrick, age 41 (self)
Fred BRAWN, age 15 (son)
David Douglass, age 20, (brother)
Alie Braun, age 23, (daughter)

It is possible that this is Joseph's son and that Martha is the true mother of Fred Brawn. Further research is needed. Parents: Joseph Frank BRAWN and Sarah EMPFIELD.

He was married to Edith NUTE on 25 Dec 1891 in Milton, Strafford Co., New Hampshire.(1558) (1559) Children were: Gordon Nute BRAWN .

bullet Frederic BRAWN was born on 16 Dec 1819 in Winslow, Kennebec, Maine. (1560) Note that Joseph was born on 15 Dec and Frederic on 16 Dec 1819. This discrepancy is interesting, and if true, it could mean that Joseph was born before midnight on 15 Dec and Frederic was born after midnight on 16 Dec. Parents: Joseph BRAWN and Abigail GILLEY.

He was married to Eunice C ---- in Maine.(1561)

bullet Gordon Francis BRAWN Sr. was born on 9 Jan 1926 in Portsmouth, Strafford Co., NH. (1562) He died on 1 Nov 1995 in Portsmouth, Strafford Co., NH.(1563) Parents: Gordon Nute BRAWN and Martha RODGER.

(1567) He died on 12 Dec 1930 in Portsmouth, Strafford Co., NH. (1568) The obituary of Fred Brawn states that he had three grandchildren. It is not known if they are Gorden's children or those of a sibling of Gorden.

The obituary spells Gorden's first name as "Garden," but an assumption has been made that this was an error and his name was actually Gorden. Parents: Fred Lewellyn BRAWN and Edith NUTE.

from Steven James:
"Suffice it to say that I have a photo copy
of the article in I believe the Altoona Tribune dated 8 April 1882 in which
as the article was going to press, Joseph was still fighting to survive.
The article mid stream switches modes and announces that Joseph died at
approximately 6 o'clock on Saturday morning...which would have been April 8,
1882. It is quite a long article. In the article it states that he about
40 years of age and that he has a mother and father in New Hampshire. He
married Sarah a daughter of Peter Empfield and they have five children, the
oldest being a boy of 14 years."
He was buried on 10 Apr 1882 in Fairview Cemetery, Blair Co., Altoona, PA. (1584) Lot 38, Sec. L - same location as wife Sarah who died later in 1927.

bullet Joseph Franklin BRAWN(1588) was born on 15 Dec 1819 in Winslow, Kennebec, Maine.(1589) He resided on 16 Feb 1891 in Milton, Strafford Co., New Hampshire. (1590) see source "Affidavit, Joseph Brawn Sr." regarding confirmation of ancestral line.

When searching records, two spellings should be considered, B-R-A-W-N, which is the correct spelling, and B-R-O-W-N, an easily confused spelling due to handwritten records being recorded or interpreted incorrectly.

The Census of 1880 shows a Joseph Brawn, age 80 (born 1800) whose occupation was a cooper, living in Bradley, Penobscot, Maine, along with wife Anna, age 75. Their parents are also listed as being born in Maine. While it is possible that Joseph Jr., born abt 1845, could be their son, it must be remembered that some records suggest that Joseph Jr.'s parents were living in Milton, N.H. when their son died in 1882. No conclusion to this as of June 4, 2007. Parents: Joseph BRAWN and Abigail GILLEY.

He was married to UNKNOWN. (1591) Children were: Joseph Frank BRAWN .
