![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In April 1882, the Altoona "Tribune" provides an account of the accident that killed Fred's father Joseph. In the article, it notes the oldest child being a boy of 14. This would point to a probably birth year of 1868. An obituary of Fred L. Brawn states that his year of birth was 1867. For now, 1867 is regarded as most accurate. According to Fred's great-grandson, Brian Brawn, Fred was born 25 Dec. 1864. This needs to be verified because Fred's father Joseph married Saran Empfield in Oct. 1865. Obituary of mother 8 July 1927 states his first name was Frank. There is a strong suggestion that Fred may be Joseph's son, but not the son of Sarah. Fred did not live with his father and his family with Sarah Empfield Brawn in Altoona. Fred stayed behind in Maine. In the 1880 Census for Gardiner, Kennebec, Maine, there is a family listed as such: Martha Philbrick, age 41 (self) Fred BRAWN, age 15 (son) David Douglass, age 20, (brother) Alie Braun, age 23, (daughter) It is possible that this is Joseph's son and that Martha is the true mother of Fred Brawn. Further research is needed. Parents: Joseph Frank BRAWN and Sarah EMPFIELD. ![]() The Census of 1930 notes the state of birth, but not the year of birth. He died on 8 Apr 1882 in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa..(1581) (1582) (1583) death preceded death of wife Sarah from Steven James: "Suffice it to say that I have a photo copy of the article in I believe the Altoona Tribune dated 8 April 1882 in which as the article was going to press, Joseph was still fighting to survive. The article mid stream switches modes and announces that Joseph died at approximately 6 o'clock on Saturday morning...which would have been April 8, 1882. It is quite a long article. In the article it states that he about 40 years of age and that he has a mother and father in New Hampshire. He married Sarah a daughter of Peter Empfield and they have five children, the oldest being a boy of 14 years." He was buried on 10 Apr 1882 in Fairview Cemetery, Blair Co., Altoona, PA. Their parents are also listed as being born in Maine. While it is possible that Joseph Jr., born abt 1845, could be their son, it must be remembered that some records suggest that Joseph Jr.'s parents were living in Milton, N.H. when their son died in 1882.
