Carbon County |
![]() |
Carbon County was created on March 13, 1843, from parts of Monroe County and Northampton County. If you guessed that the name has something to do with coal, you're right. The county is known for its large deposits of anthracite coal. The county seat is Jim Thorpe, named after the famous native American athlete who is buried there. Prior to 1954, the same county seat was called Mauch Chunk, an Indian name meaning "bear mountain."
