Carbon County

Click here for useful research links.

Carbon County was created on March 13, 1843, from parts of Monroe County and Northampton County. If you guessed that the name has something to do with coal, you're right. The county is known for its large deposits of anthracite coal. The county seat is Jim Thorpe, named after the famous native American athlete who is buried there. Prior to 1954, the same county seat was called Mauch Chunk, an Indian name meaning "bear mountain."

Did you know?
Eckley Miner's Village, near Weatherly, was built and owned by a series of coal companies from 1854 to 1969. The village was the location site for the 1970 movie, The Molly Maguires, and included restoration of some buildings and construction of other buildings, such as a reproduction breaker, company general store, and mule barn. After the filming, the entire town was turned into a museum, with the 200 residents allowed to live there as long as they liked. Today, only 18 residents remain.
