Tioga County

Tioga County, named for the Tioga River, was created on March 26, 1804, from part of Lycoming County. Tioga comes from a native American word meaning "the forks of a stream." Wellsboro, the county seat, was laid out in 1806 and incorporated on March 6, 1830. The borough was named for a prominent family with the surname of Wells.
