Pennsylvania Counties

Cameron County

Cameron County was named after U.S. Senator Simon Cameron (1799-1889) and created on March 29, 1860. Cameron, born in Dauphin County, was known as the "Czar of Pennsylvania," because he was one the most powerful state political bosses in history. In 1860, Cameron ran unsuccessfully against Abraham Lincoln in the Republican convention, but he did serve briefly as President Lincoln's Secretary of War. Cameron County was formerly part of Clinton County, Elk County, McKean County and Potter County. The county seat, Emporium, is a Latin word meaning "trade or market center" and was incorporated on October 13, 1864.
