York CountyYork County was created from part of Lancaster County on August 19, 1749. Some historians believe it was named after an early patron of the Penn family, the English Duke of York. However, because of its proximity to Lancaster County and the linkage in English history between Lancashire and the shire of York, other historians believe that York county was named after its English geographical counterpart. The county seat of York was laid out in 1741, incorporated as a borough on September 24, 1787, and chartered as a city on January 11, 1887. From October 1777 to June 1778, the American Revolutionary capital was moved to York from Philadelphia and it is here where the Articles of Confederation were approved as the first step toward forming a national government. |
