Susquehanna CountySusquehanna County, named after the Susquehanna River, was created on February 21, 1810. It was part of Luzerne County to which Susquehanna County remained attached until 1812. The name comes from the Susquehannock Indian Tribe whose ancestors occupied the region long before European explorers arrived in 1608. The county seat of Montrose was laid out in 1812 and incorporated on March 19, 1824. The borough's name has two sources. "Mont" is a French word for mountain. "Rose" comes from a prominent citizen of the county, Dr. R. H. Rose. |
