Lycoming CountyLycoming County was created on April 13, 1795, from part of Northumberland County and was named for Lycoming Creek. The name means "sandy or gravelly creek" in the Delaware Indian language. The county seat is Williamsport which was laid out in 1795, incorporated as a borough on March 1, 1806, and chartered as a city on January 15, 1866. Historians cannot agree on the origin of the city's name. Some say it was named after Judge William Hepburn. Others say that Michael Ross named it for his son William. A third variation was that Williamsport was named directly for William Ross, who was a boatman who used the city as a port years before the city was founded. |
