Lawrence CountyLawrence County was created on March 20, 1849. It was formed from parts of Beaver County and Mercer County and named for Admiral Oliver Hazard Perry's flagship, the "Lawrence," which had been named for Captain James Lawrence, a naval hero. The county seat is New Castle, which was laid out in 1802. It was incorporated as a borough on March 25, 1825, and chartered as a city on February 25, 1869. Historians cannot agree whether New Castle was named for Newcastle, England, or New Castle, Delaware. Since 1906, New Castle has been the statewide repository for all Pennsylvania vital records of births and deaths. |
