Lackawanna County

Lackawanna County, on August 13, 1878, became the last of Pennsylvania's 67 counties to be created. It was formed from part of Luzerne County and named for the Lackawanna River, or "stream that forks." The county seat of Scranton was laid out in 1841, became a borough in 1856 and chartered as a city on April 23, 1866. It was named after the Scranton family, founders of the city.
