Juniata County

Juniata County was created from part of Mifflin County on March 2, 1831, and named for the Juniata River. The name comes from an Indian language meaning "people of the standing stone." The county seat, Mifflintown, was named after Governor Thomas Mifflin. It was laid out in 1791 and incorporated as a borough on March 6, 1833.
