Delaware County

Delaware County was created on September 26, 1789, from part of Chester County. The county was named after the Delaware River, which had been named after a governor of Virginia, Lord de la Warr. Media, named because of its central location within the county, has been the county seat since 1850 and was incorporated as a borough on March 11, 1850. The original county seat was Chester when it was part of Chester County prior to 1788. Chester was the capital of Pennsylvania 1681-1682.
