Dauphin CountyDauphin County was created on March 4, 1785. It was named after the Dauphin, the title held by the eldest son of the French king. The county was carved from Lancaster County. John Harris was the founder of the county seat and current capital of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg. Chester, Philadelphia, and Lancaster have previously served as the state capital. Harrisburg was incorporated as a borough on April 13, 1791, and chartered as a city on March 19, 1860. |
