Columbia CountyColumbia County was created from part of Northumberland County on March 22, 1813. The name Columbia refers to a poetic description of America. The town of Bloomsburg has been the county seat since November 30, 1847. It was incorporated as a town on March 4, 1870, and remains the only incorporated town in the state (all others are called boroughs, cities, or townships). Most communities in Pennsylvania thought of as towns are actually boroughs. Bloomsburg was named after Samuel Bloom, a commissioner in Northumberland County. The former county seat was Danville, from 1813 to 1846, now the seat of Montour County. |
