Pennsylvania Counties

Clinton County

Clinton County was created on June 21, 1839 from parts of Centre County and Lycoming County. The county was named after the former governor of New York, DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828), a promoter of the Erie Canal. The name choice is believed to have been selected to out-maneuver opponents of the new county. The original name proposed for the county was Eagle. The county seat, Lock Haven, played an important role in the old canal system, the West Branch Canal, completed to Lock Haven in 1834. Lock Haven was incorporated as a borough on May 25, 1840, and chartered as a city on March 28, 1870.
